Instructions
Study Lesson 3: Puerto Ricans in the U.S. in Module 3 of this course. Be sure to follow the instructions by reading the materials and viewing the videos. Then respond to the questions below.
- Discuss the experience of Puerto Ricans in New York City as described in the first video.
- Compare the Puerto Rican experience as described in the first video to that of other Latin Americans who come to the U.S., or to that of other immigrant or migrant groups you may be familiar with. (*Note that Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens who migrate to the U.S. mainland and are not considered immigrants).
- Comment on Marc Anthony’s relationship to New York City and its Puerto Rican community as represented in the music video. Why do you think that he chose to shoot the video in that setting? Do you see any ties with what you learned in the other video?
Your initial response and your peer responses will be graded together using the Culture Discussion Rubric to determine your written discussion score. Your responses should show that you have engaged deeply with the lesson material and your classmates’ ideas. Your writing should be in your own words and polished to the best of your ability, and your opinions expressed in a respectful manner. Please do not copy/paste the questions into your response.
